Remember when we introduced you to Starrset? It's been a few weeks now, and we've since discovered this gem of a track on YouTube. "I Got It" was remixed by none other than the infamous Donald Glaude. Glaude takes the original track and mixes it up with a bit of Benny Benassi's "Satisfaction." The tune is standard dance floor flair, but we definitely foresee it getting the room jumping. With hits like this, the young Starrset duo are undoubtably on their way up!

HipTronik: Let’s start off by having you guys introduce yourselves to HipTronik.

True: Devon True, 18.

McFly: Maverick McFly, 21.

HipTronik: Where did the name Starrset come from?

True: We both look at ourselves as stars and set means two. So we just put it together.

McFly: It was pretty funny the way it came up. Because we were thinking up names when we first started.

True: So. Cal was one of the first names we threw out. And we were going with that for not too long. We were like, “So. Cal? Eh…”

McFly: We’re pretty much leading the pack. If you look up, you see stars—what you shoot for. That’s what we want to be.

HipTronik: How long have you guys been working on this project for?

McFly: For about three years now. And we started messing around and then it really got serious. And being brothers and always being around each other, we just really got into it heavy.

HipTronik: How would you guys describe your sound? What are you guys offering?

McFly: Our sound? We like to describe it as world pop. We like to coin that phrase. Pretty much that means across the board, we can dip into funk, hip hop, electronic – pretty much every genre thrown into the pot. And that’s what you get from our sound.

HipTronik: And what influenced you guys to go towards that kind of sound?

McFly: Basically listening to everything. What do we listen to? Bat For Lashes. We like…

True: Defense Mechanism.

McFly: Janelle Monae. Of course the old school stuff like Madonna. We listen to a lot of different genres that we can pull from and put our own twist on as well.

HipTronik: When did you guys first realize that you wanted to do music?

True: I’d say probably about two or three years ago.

McFly: Yeah about three and a half years ago. When was that? Summer of 2006? Yeah, summer of ‘06. And then it really got serious in the top of ’07. At first we were depending on other producers but I think to really have a stranglehold on your own sound and where you want to go direction wise is to write and produce for yourself. We always wrote for ourselves, but I started producing all our music. So I feel like to have a really great sound. You can always incorporate other sounds as well, but I think if you’re producing, it’s something that’s special.

HipTronik: You can narrow it down to your own style. Instead of relying on what’s already there…

McFly: Exactly. You can play with stuff, you can tweak it. Working with other people is tricky. Because either you click or you don’t. So, working with yourself, it’s always great.

HipTronik: It’s taken care of. So, what is that brotherly bond like?

True: It’s good and bad, but the good definitely outweighs the bad. Just the writing process, the producing process…we’ve been around each other all our lives so we already know – it’s like a click, like that. When we both hear something, we both read each other. We don’t even have to say anything.

McFly: We don’t even have to say anything. We just look at each other and say, “Oh, that’s it!”

HipTronik: You have an LP coming out this year?

McFly: Yes, we do. We have an LP coming out. Not sure we have a release date yet, but we do have some things in the works. Label wise we’re trying to see what we’re trying to do and release through. But yeah, we’re definitely coming out with an album this year.

HipTronik: And what can we expect from it?

True: Craziness.

McFly: Madness. If you followed us and seen our page, pretty much we’re trying to break the barrier sound-wise. Just not do the regular abnormal.

True: You said the regular abnormal? [Laughter]

McFly: No but it’s true. It makes sense. Because the regular abnormal now, everybody wants to be different.

True: Yeah, that is true. I didn’t even catch that you said that.

McFly: Everybody wants to be different now. So now being different isn’t even being different. We’re trying to stray away from that. The “oh yeah, we do this and we do that.” We’re basically trying to break the boundaries of doing that and go even further.

HipTronik: What’s this about writing and producing for Lady Gaga?

McFly: We’re talking to her A&R people right now. So we’ll be submitting some tracks and songs. I know she writes for herself but – actually the song we have now, “My Face,” was originally supposed to be for her but –

True: We loved the song so much! It was so good…

McFly: We were just like “Nah. We’ll probably just keep that one.” Because we got a really good response from that one. We just tested the water.

True: Yeah, we posted it up and people just went crazy.

McFly: Yeah, they were loving it. But yeah, we are definitely submitting some production work and some writing work so we’ll see what happens with that.

HipTronik: Kanye West produced one of your tracks. How did that come about?

True: His management hit us up on MySpace. And asked us to get on a remix for Tony Williams (G.O.O.D. Music). He sent over vocals and Kanye sent over the track. So that was exciting.

McFly: And then we threw in our violinist who does all our performances with us too. She’s from Cape Town. So she came on the track and did the violin stuff, so that was cool.

HipTronik: So, violins? What other kinds of instruments do you incorporate? That’s a bit different.

McFly: Right, we have an electric violinist. She is awesome. We have her, of course us, a drummer, a couple dancers, and a DJ. So, that’s our live set. We like to give a really good performance. I think performance is so key now, because you’ll hear a certain type of artist and they’re just studio artists. They’ll be good on record, but when you see them live it’s like “Eh, I’d rather hear your record.”

HipTronik: Wasn’t worth the cost of the ticket. [Laughter]

McFly: Right, so we want to bring the biggest and the best of both worlds. Being good on wax and live performances too. Giving a good show.

HipTronik: Speaking of live performances, you guys have an international tour coming up, right?

McFly: Yes.

HipTronik: And where will you be headed for that?

McFly: Amsterdam, Tokyo, London, Dubai. We have some dates out here that are still pending.

True: Well there are still a lot of tour dates that are still pending. So we’re probably going to be some openings for some artists and setting up some tour dates with –

McFly: Yeah we still have a lot of dates that are – we have our dates and we also have some dates that are pending. Some of the dates might switch, so we have to see what the best thing for us is. But so far that’s what we have.

HipTronik: You were talking about your instruments earlier and how you compile that into a live show. Describe a live show for us. What makes a Starrset show?

True: First of all, theatrics.

McFly: Yeah. We have to play with the crowd and definitely be dramatic. We have to go to another state of mind pretty much. It’s not just, “Hey, here’s our song!” It’s pretty much -

True: Visual.

McFly: Yeah, we like to be visual. And we’re incorporating a lot more stuff into our show now so we can be more theatrical and be more dramatic. And definitely bring in the elements of different lighting-

True: The elements of life. [Laughter]

HipTronik: Can you give us an example?

McFly: Have you ever been on Space Mountain at Disneyland? You know how you go up that tunnel before you get to the actual ride? It kind of gives you that feeling, with the lighting. We’re going to add cool stuff like smoke and even dialogue to where we can talk to each other. It’ll pretty much be like a ride at Disneyland. That’s the feeling we want to give.

HipTronik: So a Starrset show is a ride at Disneyland! Awesome. Switching gears a bit, you guys are creating a reality show for Bravo TV.

McFly: We’re still in talks with Bravo, but our show just got picked up by LiveWire.com. They’ll be launching sometime this year, I’m not sure. But that’s an online TV network. We’ll be on there. And then the dealings with Bravo we’re still working on some details. But if all goes well we’ll probably be on Bravo TV as well too.

HipTronik: What does the show focus on?

True: Just our rise as artists. It shows the ups and downs and trials and tribulations. Pretty much just starting from scratch and just working your way up. And acquiring bigger and better deals.

HipTronik: You guys did modeling early on?

True: Well, I did more modeling. He was the child actor. He did a couple of Nickelodeon shows.

McFly: I started when I was four years old. He started when he was six months. He’s actually the Michelin baby! So he did a lot of modeling stuff when he was younger.

True: Yeah, I just did something for Disney last week. It was pretty cool.

HipTronik: You guys have your hand in fashion a lot, right?

McFly: Yeah, we’re coming out with our own line. We’re working with a couple of titles right now, but it’s definitely going to be pretty big. We’re going to collaborate with a couple of our artists; it’s going to be pretty sick. We’re going to have shirts and tanks and bandanas – you name it.

HipTronik: And you have that New Era deal. What can you tell us about that?

McFly: The New Era deal is basically exclusive Starrset hats that we are going to be designing. And they are going to be putting them out across America through all their outlets. And we’re going to be designing – I don’t know how many designs yet – but a couple designs, and I guess we’re going to run with one and see how it does. But yeah, it’s pretty exciting.

True: Yeah, they approached us a year ago and we’ve been excited ever since.

McFly: So we’re just working out the details and coming up with some creative stuff and letting the juices flow. It’s going to be excellent.

HipTronik: What records have you guys been listening to?

True: The Bloody Beetroots.

McFly: Yeah, definitely.

True: DeadMau5.

McFly: Fangs, Zeitgeits.

True: La Roux is pretty good.

McFly: Yeah I like LeRutte, Duran Duran.

HipTronik: Do you tend to have different or similar tastes in music?

True: We tend to like the same things.

HipTronik: Who do you guys want to collaborate with?

True: We’re actually talking with Vampire Weekend. That was a while ago but we’re probably looking to do some stuff with them.

McFly: Yeah. I’d love to work with La Roux. There’s a select few.

True: We’re picky.

HipTronik: This blog is called HipTronik. The music, and your music especially, is a mesh of hip hop and electronic. What do you guys think about where the state of the industry is going in 2010. Where is it going and where do you feel your place is as a part of it?

McFly: Well, first I think the state of the industry is that it’s in a good position if you’re an indie. Major is kind of trailing behind and trying to copy what the indie artists are doing. But the indies are really beating the race on sound, look, popularity and style.

True: And just respect really.

McFly: Yeah, all the best artists are pretty much indie right now.

True: There’s some good majors but—

McFly: There are very few, though. Plus I think that it’s not bad to be with a major label, but it’s just finding your place and who you are. A few labels can still do it the best, but a lot of them are like, “Hey what’s going on? Let’s copy this. Let’s try to create this.” It’s pretty much like that. I think that a lot of the indies are getting bigger. I like to call them “indie majors”. Because it’s like you’re indie but you’re on MTV, soundtracks, and commercials.

HipTronik: This is the age of paving your own way and circumventing the label…

McFly: Exactly. And a lot of people are becoming their own labels because you can put your stuff out online and promote yourself any kind of way. It’s much different than how it was 10, 20 years ago.

True: Even, five years ago. It’s changed a lot.

McFly: But our place would be to pave our own way. Pretty much [we] can be any and everywhere and do what we want to do and not have somebody telling us what to do.

HipTronik: Trying to mold an image you already have created for yourself.

McFly: Right.

HipTronik: Any last messages for your fans?

McFly: Keep supporting. Thanks for the love. Definitely try to make it out to one of our shows. We’ll be posting more shows on our MySpace. Definitely look out for our clothing line, our album, our show, our hats.

True: Our merch.

McFly: Keep us on your radar!

You may not have heard of Starrset just yet, but that's going to change fast. Fronted by brothers Devon True and Maverick McFly, Starrset is taking the Hiptronik genre down a rabbit hole of their very own. Already gaining recognition, the pair are currently writing and producing on Lady Gaga's sophomore album and have managed to snag Kanye to help produce a track of their own. As if that weren't enough, they've scored a hat deal with New Era and are preparing to embark on an international tour come February. Check out "My Face," Starrset's latest single featuring Fangs. A dancefloor banger in its own right, the brothers' flow matches up perfectly with Fangs's, resulting in a dizzying electronic frenzy. Also, be sure to listen to "Druks," another great track by the ace duo.
